Means of egress

What is the minimum percentage of the number and capacity of the exit enclosures for a building that must connect to the public way without intervening spaces? A. 20%, B. 35%, C. 40%, D. 50%, E. 60%

Exits from a room

In a 20ft by 30ft sprinklered space requiring two exits, what is the minimum distance that one exit must be separated from the other? A. 10ft B. 12ft C. 14ft D. 16ft Answer B. 12ft. For a sprinklered space, take the diagonal distance of the space times one third for the minimum separation between exits. ARE 4.0 exam prep: CDS

Vertical exit and exit passageways

According to IBC exit design requirements (1020. & 1021.) what is the maximum travel distance allowed in vertical exit and exit-passageway enclosures? A. 75 feet above the lowest level of fire dept vehicle access B. 250 feet C. 350 feet D. none Answer D. none. There is no limit as these egress components are intended to provide a protected means to safely egress in an emergency. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BDCS

Exits and exit access

The maximum occupant load for one exit in this illustration is 49. For which occupancies is this applicable? (Select 4) A. A, B. B, C. I D. S, E. Fm F. M

Seating at tables or counter

A coffee shop is being planned with loose seating at tables and fixed seating at a counter. The clear width of an aisle separating these two arrangements must allow for _____ inches chair space from the edge of the table and _____ inches from the back of the stool. (Fill-in)

Exit access corridor width

The minimum corridor width in any occupancy for access to electrical, mechanical or plumbing systems is: A. 22 inches B. 24 inches C. 30 inches D. 32 inches E. 36 inches F. 44 inches Answer B. 24 inches is typical. ARE 4.0 exam prep: SD

Life Safety: nightclubs

100 people perished in the 2003 Station Nightclub Fire. The National Institute of Standards and Technology conducted an investigation into the multiple factors that contributed to the disaster and the great loss of life. A central issue concerns the egress system: the nightclub was required by IBC to have 3 exits, but had 4 exits and the maximum occupant load per floor area of 585 persons was not exceeded on the night of the fire by the estimated 458 attendees of the show. What could have failed to accommodate safe discharge of the occupants? Answer Egress widths were not properly sized, even though the number of exits was sufficient. Also, placement and configuration at the main entrance was deficient. ARE 4.0 exam prep: SD Resource tip: Read more about the NIST's recommendations for nightclubs as a result of their investigation of the 2003 Station Nightclub Fire. RLGA Technical Services (consultants) also has an excellent article on this analysis.

Exit corridors

An alcove (recess) along an exit corridor partially accommodates the swing of a door opening onto the path of egress travel, reducing its clear width. When fully opened, what is the maximum projection of the door that is allowed into the corridor? Answer 7 inches maximum. ARE 4.0 exam prep: CDS

Revolving doors

IBC allows revolving doors to be used as egress doors only when what 2 conditions are met? Answer 1. the leaves of the door can collapse in the direction of egress (force not greater than 130lbs) 2. aggregate width of egress is at least 36 inches ARE 4.0 exam prep: BDCS

Egress Landings

For occupant loads of 50 persons or more, a door to a landing in any position of opening swing, may not reduce the landing width to less than ____% of its required width. A. 20%, B. 30% C. 40%, D. 50%, E. 60%

Exit discharge

A fully-sprinklered lobby may serve as the final portion of the means of egress when additional specific conditions are met - connects to a free and unobstructed way to the exterior, entire level of discharge is separated by same fire rated fire-resistive construction from the area below. Most significantly, what condition must be met regarding occupant load & capacity of the exit? Answer Exit discharge through intervening spaces is only possible for up to 50% of the number & capacity of the exit enclosures for the building. Thus, the other 50% must connect to the public way without intervening spaces. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BDCS

Exit passage width

The minimum exit width in inches is determined by multiplying the total flow in the passage (total occupant load) by _____? Answer 0.2 (sprinklered) or 0.3 (non-sprinklered) per person with no part of an exit passage less than 44 inches wide. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BS

Doors in series

Doors in series must be spaced at least 48" apart. Disregarding exceptions for power doors in tandem or residential storm doors, how long must the space between two 36" doors swinging in the same direction be? (One door swings into the space and the next door swings out of the space.) Answer At least seven (7) feet in length.

Exit access

In a building that requires two separate exits, the exits must be located to minimize the chance that a single emergency could make both exits inaccessible at the same time. What is a general rule of thumb to calculate the minimum distance between exits for an unsprinklered facility? Answer d' (distance) must be at least 1/2 D (the diagonal measurement of the building or space served by the exits.) ARE 4.0 exam prep: SD
