Fire detection

Which of the following detector types can detect smoke or a smoldering fire that has not yet burst into flames? A. Ionization B. Rise-of-temperature C. Photoelectric D. Flame detectors

Fire Extinguisher Labels

Fire extinguishers bearing a blue circle-shaped label are classified for which type of fire? A. ordinary combustibles, B. flammable liquids, C. electrical fires D. metal fires

Sprinkler Systems

Which type of fire sprinkler system is used where damage from water to the contents or finishes of a building is a significant concern: A. wet-pipe B. dry-pipe C. pre-action D. deluge

Fire door time ratings

An exterior wall with a 2 hour rating requires a door assembly rating (standard door test NFPA 252) of 1 1/2 hours. If the exterior wall rating is increased to 3 hours, what is the required door assembly rating? A. 1 1/2, B. 2 C. 2 1/2, D. 3

Sprinkler system types

A large warehouse facility in Oregon stores paper products. Which of the following fire sprinkler systems should be installed? A. Pre-action system, B. Wet pipe system C. Deluge system, D. Dry pipe system

Fire development

Fire development leading to flashover occurs when: (choose 1) A. the high temperatures developed activate sprinkler heads. B. smoldering embers restart a fire presumed to be extinguished. C. flames from one roof jump to the next building's roof, igniting it. D. all materials or surfaces in a space reach combustion temperature at once. E. oxygen is reintroduced to a fire's oxygen-starved product gases causing a backdraft explosion event. Answer D. all materials or surfaces in a space reach combustion temperature at once. Although debate still exists on these terms, flashover is distinguished from backdraft in that backdraft is an explosion and flashover is not. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BDCS

Automatic fire detection

Hotel occupancy R-1 requires automatic fire detection in which of the following: A. unsprinklered buildings B. without interior corridors C. with guest rooms having exit directly to exterior D. none of the above Answer D. none of the above - automatic fire detection is used for all hotels except buildings without interior corridors and quest rooms having exit directly to the exterior. Escalator openings

What is the function of a soffit surrounding an escalator opening through a floor level? Answer The soffit functions as a smoke guard, housing a baffle that deflects smoke and flames. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BS

Moldable intumescent

What is moldable intumescent putty used for? Answer Moldable intumescent putty is a one-component, non-curing, fire-rated material used at electrical outlet boxes and other thru-penetrations that will expand under heat to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through an assembly. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BDCS

Fire evacuation

Which of the following statements best describes why exterior fire escapes are no longer recommended or usually permitted? A. Manufacturing has ceased production of these. B. Rising smoke from lower floors eliminates the safety of using them C. They cannot be securely attached to typical current construction D. They are difficult to maintain Answer B. is the correct answer. Smoke inhalation is as perilous as leaping flames. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BS

Building code goals

What primary and secondary goals of building codes are served by sprinkler system provisions? Answer protection of human life (life safety) and protection of property. ARE 4.0 exam prep: PPP

Life Safety: nightclubs

100 people perished in the 2003 Station Nightclub Fire. The National Institute of Standards and Technology conducted an investigation into the multiple factors that contributed to the disaster and the great loss of life. A central issue concerns the egress system: the nightclub was required by IBC to have 3 exits, but had 4 exits and the maximum occupant load per floor area of 585 persons was not exceeded on the night of the fire by the estimated 458 attendees of the show. What could have failed to accommodate safe discharge of the occupants? Answer Egress widths were not properly sized, even though the number of exits was sufficient. Also, placement and configuration at the main entrance was deficient. ARE 4.0 exam prep: SD Resource tip: Read more about the NIST's recommendations for nightclubs as a result of their investigation of the 2003 Station Nightclub Fire. RLGA Technical Services (consultants) also has an excellent article on this analysis.

Safety code construction

What fire rated construction under NFPA 5000 is closest to IBC's Type IA (IBC's highest rated structure which supports design loads for at least 3 hours after a fire starts)? Answer NFPA 5000s Type I (332). Type I (442) requires 4 hour rating for structural components. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BDCS

Dead End Corridors

Under what circumstance and for which occupancies may a dead-end corridor distance be unlimited? Answer For all occupancies, a dead-end distance may be unlimited when the dead-end is less than 2.5 times the least corridor width. See IBC table 1017.1 ARE 4.0 exam division: programming, planning & practice

Fire extinguishers

Which type of fire extinguisher is suitable for a fire involving electrical equipment, before the source of electricity has been disconnected? Class A Class B Class C Class D Class K Answer Dry-chemical media is suitable, available as Class ABC, or Class BC, never Class A only extinguishers which are water type.. ARE 4.0 exam prep: BS

Fire-rated assemblies: glazing

Which type of glazing is used in fire-resistance-rated partitions where the partition must have a rating greater than 1-hour and the glazing must have the same rating as the partition in which it is used? A. Fire-protection-rated glazing B. Fire-resistance-rated glazing Answer B. Fire-resistance-rated glazing - tested as part of a fire-resistance-rated wall assembly in accordance with ASTM E-119.
