Exit access

In a building that requires two separate exits, the exits must be located to minimize the chance that a single emergency could make both exits inaccessible at the same time. What is a general rule of thumb to calculate the minimum distance between exits for an unsprinklered facility?

Answerd' (distance) must be at least 1/2 D (the diagonal measurement of the building or space served by the exits.)

  1. Isn't this one 1/3 of the diagonal distance, not 1/2?

  2. If the building is sprinklered, then yes. If not, still 1/2. Although intended for nyc code specific issues, this nyc building department presentation has some good graphic illustrations of egress. www.nyc.gov/html/dob/downloads/pdf/means_of_egress_presentation.pdf

Building Efficiency

Convert the usable area of classrooms planned with medium efficiency level of new construction to the gross building area given the following model factors: Net Assignable Square Feet: 10,000, Space Factor: 1.5, Building Efficiency Ratio: 67%

Spec coordination

In case there is a discrepancy between specifications and the drawings, which takes precedence? Answer Neither, A201 considers these - quote - complementary and what is required by one shall be binding as if required by all.- unquote. ARE 4.0 exam prep: CDS

Footing cross-section

When the thickness of a foundation wall = 6", the cross-sectional proportions in this image are appropriate for which of the following: A. a footing supported on clay soil B. light frame construction supporting one floor and one roof C. allowable bearing capacity of foundation soil is low in relation to building loads D. when a continuous footing is required Answer B. light frame construction supporting one floor and one roof (in accordance with Table 1805.4.2) ARE 4.0 exam prep: PPP
