Building Efficiency

Convert the usable area of classrooms planned with medium efficiency level of new construction to the gross building area given the following model factors:
Net Assignable Square Feet: 10,000, Space Factor: 1.5, Building Efficiency Ratio: 67%

Answer: Gross building area (GSF) = 15,000 sf. Either factor can be used to find the answer - 10,000 x 1.5 = 15,000sf or 10,000 / 0.66667 = 15,000sf (+/-)

  1. question about this...the answer to this question is the gross area, but the question seemed like it was asking something else. also, it looks like the space factor wasn't needed to answer this question. why?

  2. Like many potential exam questions, the wording of this one includes superfluous information that is unnecessary to finding the answer. The question asks to find the gross building area from the usable area of the classrooms.

  3. The calcs in the answer are incorrect. Using the Building Efficiency Ratio to calculate the Gross Sq Ft you have to divide 10,000 by .67 not multiply.

  4. Thanks Joshua! I just updated the answer notation.

  5. I really appreciate the site, I find the example questions very useful in reviewing for the ARE tests, when the answer is viewable.

Is it just me, or when you hover over the Answer is some of the answer cut off or sometimes shows up blank all together?

Let me know if there is something I should be doing differently...thanks!
