Net Assignable Square Feet: 10,000, Space Factor: 1.5, Building Efficiency Ratio: 67%
Answer: Gross building area (GSF) = 15,000 sf. Either factor can be used to find the answer - 10,000 x 1.5 = 15,000sf or 10,000 / 0.66667 = 15,000sf (+/-)

question about this...the answer to this question is the gross area, but the question seemed like it was asking something else. also, it looks like the space factor wasn't needed to answer this question. why?
ReplyDeleteLike many potential exam questions, the wording of this one includes superfluous information that is unnecessary to finding the answer. The question asks to find the gross building area from the usable area of the classrooms.
ReplyDeleteThe calcs in the answer are incorrect. Using the Building Efficiency Ratio to calculate the Gross Sq Ft you have to divide 10,000 by .67 not multiply.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joshua! I just updated the answer notation.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the site, I find the example questions very useful in reviewing for the ARE tests, when the answer is viewable.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or when you hover over the Answer is some of the answer cut off or sometimes shows up blank all together?
Let me know if there is something I should be doing differently...thanks!
Hi Jason, very glad the site is useful to you. Some browsers don't seem to show the answers all the time. Try Firefox, Chrome, or Safari. Internet Explorer works if it's IE9 or later. Thanks for visiting!
