Without calculating vertical shear, some prescriptive guidance in the code exists regarding notched beams (which as a general rule should be avoided). If a 4 x 12 wood beam is notched at a supporting end, which of the following is the maximum depth it can be notched?
A. 1 3/4 inches
B. 2 inches
C. 2 1/2 inches
D. 2 3/4 inches
E. 3 inches

Answer"D. 2 3/4 inches does not exceed the maximum one-fourth the beam depth allowable by IBC. The actual depth of a 4x12 is 11.25 inches.
