Soil testing

What is the name of the test carried out to determine the optimum relationship between moisture content and fill density? The following steps proceed from the results:
1. Laboratory tests of fill samples determine the amount of compaction required before construction begins.
2. Fill is deposited on site in a series of compacted layers between 8-12 inches.
3. 95-100% compaction of optimum (tested) density of the site soil must be achieved.
