Certificates of Authority

Architecture firms that wish to operate or open branches across several states often need to obtain a Certificate of Authority, sometimes called Certificate of Qualification, to conduct business (opening bank accounts, entering leases, hiring employees...) in a particular state. Why does this not apply to sole-proprietorships?
