How does the natural weather phenomenon of temperature inversion (sometimes called cold inversion) work in relation to air pollution?

AnswerCooler, heavier air at ground level becomes trapped along with the pollutants discharged into it by warmer air at higher elevations, until another current displaces the layer and clears the inversion.
