Vapor retarders

In this section, a ceiling assembly separates the attic space above from the room interior below. If the building is located in Lewisville, Texas (hot-humid zone), where is the predicted location of condensation and what is the predicted condition of the gypsum board in this assembly? (Select 2 from the following)

A. outside face of vapor retarder
B. inside face of vapor retarder
C. gypsum board will be wet
D. gypsum board will be dry

Answer: A. and C. As Lewisville is a hot-humid location, expect the room interior to be cooled by air-conditioning. Kraft paper facing acts as a vapor retarder with predictable condensation on the outside face, but this is faced on both sides - so the gyp. board will be wet. The vapor retarder should only be located outside of the insulation or between the insulation and the ventilated attic space.

Calculate Luminance

A typical 60-watt standard frosted incandescent bulb outputs 890 lumens for an efficacy ratio of about 15 lumens per watt. As an A19, its shape is spherical. What is the its calculated luminance? A. 25,115 cd/in² B. 25.115 cd/ft² C. 25,115 cd/m² D. Indeterminate, missing variable. Answer If 1 candela (cd) = 4 ∏ lumens (lm), 890 x 1cd/4∏ = 71 cd, A19 = 19/8 = 2.375 in or 60mm diameter (= 30mm radius), L = intensity / projected area, 71 cd / ∏ r² = 71/ 3.14 x (.03m)² = 25,115 cd/m² ARE 4.0 exam prep: BS
