Reentrant corners

Overall building configurations in plan that assume L, T, U, H, + shapes, or a combination of these, contain reentrant corners. At these interior corners, where the projecting wing or leg is more than 15% of the plan dimension in a given direction, what two interrelated effects are possible?

AnswerStress and torsion. Differential movement of the legs creates stress concentrations at the notch of the reentrant corner and tends to rotate as the geometric centers of mass and rigidity do not correspond to the possible directions of seismic forces.

Elevator bank layouts

An office building has an elevator bank with 4 elevators where 2 cabs side-by-side are arranged opposite the other 2. Each of the elevators is 3500-pound capacity with an interior cab dimension of 6'8" x 5'4". What is the recommended corridor width at this group? A. 8 feet B. 9 feet C. 11 feet D. 12 feet Answer C. 11 feet. At 1.5-2 times the car depth (5'4), this could be a range, but 10 feet is a minimum for groups of 4 or more.
